White, Black, and Tan for Chimú Feathered Tunic

Hello, and welcome to Style Imitating Art’s “Reveal Monday”. Today is the day that the hosts, unveil our interpretations of the chosen artwork.

What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Round’s Art Work

I was the curator for this round. I chose an incredibly featured Chimú tunic from the 16th century. It looks pretty good for just being a little more than four hundred years old.

The art institute considers it one of the most important pieces of their textile collection. The knee-length, sleeveless garment has a plain-weave cotton cloth completely concealed by thousands of brightly colored feathers. It belonged to a very powerful and wealthy person.

What I Styled

I wore black, white, tan, and a little bit of feathers. And a photobomber by the name of Lynnie. I

Although this tunic is incredible, it is limited to color. This appealed to me and my closet. The Union Made wool jacket was thrifted quite a few years ago. This and my black thrifted wool jacket are the two most worn of all my jackets.

Under the jacket is a second-hand (eBay) Calvin Klein V-neck fine wool sweater, another hard worker these past four years. Black jeans and my black riding boots finish things out.

Other Things

I couldn’t do one of these without my bag and this time I am carrying a Demeilier Venice bag. I think they make great quality products and I like their ethos.

On my jacket lapel, I am wearing a small feather pin that I got from ETSY the first year feathers were a thing. I was probably somewhere around 2019. That was as far as I could go with the trend. It’s pretty much a useless little thing and I don’t wear it much but I thought I needed some feathers today.

With the V-neck of the sweater, I decided that the best solution for my neck was a small skinny silk scarf. It was also white, black, and tan.

Then there are the sunglasses. They sort of cover up the wrinkles, I guess!

I think this pretty much sums me up.

I hope this painting also inspires you to find and bring out some of the silver and grey in your closet.

Send me what you come up with at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com along with a small blurb on how the work influenced your choices by Wednesday. I will do a roundup this Thursday featuring all your designs.

Take care everyone and stay creative!

  1. Wonderful sartorial interpretation of this gorgeous tunic, Terri! As much as I am embracing brighter colors right now, I really do still love the richness of muted neutrals. Such a lovely outfit and I am absolutely in love with your black riding boots! It’s always nice to see Lynnie with her cute little photobombs, too!
