Tan and Black Stripped Jacket for “You Come First” by Audrey Kawasaki

Welcome to my interpretation for this round of Style Imitating Art.

A Little Background

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The next Wednesday, the curator shares all the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Curator

Salazar is our curator for this round and has picked an exquisite wood panel painting by Japanese-American artist Audrey Kawasaki. Her bio can be found HERE. She is also present on all social media.

Even though I have not heard of her, I think Audrey Kawasaki is a fairly well-known artist. My daughter Rachelle (also an artist) is familiar with her work.

My Choices for this Challenge

The things that immediately stood out to me were black, tan, and lines, and decided that my thrifted and altered St. John wool cardigan jacket fit nicely.

I found this jacket a few years ago, at Salvation Army, I came across a St. John wool knit suit. Being a St. John, it was a quality garment. It was also one size too large. But for $9.99, I couldn’t turn down a St. John. It sat around for a bit, but a couple of years ago, I finally, took it down a size and removed the shoulder pads, which made the jacket look very early 90’s or late 80’s.

From the photo, you really can’t see the true texture of the jacket. Below is a close-up showing this texture that I love. I think it just is classy and really dresses a pair of black jeans, which is what I usually wear with it.

I have one thrifted silk knitted sweater that I usually wear with it. I have worn black too, but I like the tan sweater better (and it has beads). I found out this past Friday, however, when the temperatures get to the low seventies, this pairing is very warm! I was a bit surprised.

As this was a suit, I also have a skirt, but just don’t know if I will ever do anything with it. I would never wear the two pieces together, That is just not me. It’s lying around here somewhere and someday I might figure out something for it. You never know.

Bag and Shoes

The stripped Francis Valentine flats add the linear look that I was going for. My black bag is also Francis Valentine’s. If you are not aware, Francis Valentine is the company that Kate Spade started a couple of years before her death. In the past, I’ve purchased a few things during their clearance sale.

That’s it, I’m done.

I hope this art inspires you to create a look and that you will join us. Send a photo of your SIA-inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to Salazar whose email is 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow. She will share the submissions on her blog this Wednesday.

Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.

If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are @terrigardner_meadowtree, @14shadesofgrey, and @shelbeeontheedge.

Time to go and see you later!

  1. This is such a perfect interpretation, Terri! I love the stripes on your sweater and shoes!
That was a real bargain for St. John! I remember shopping with a friend who was an attorney. She was trying on all these beautiful suits, and I was just gawping in amazement! There was no way I could afford one on a teacher’s salary! The same goes for Frances Valentine. I might splurge for one of the gorgeous and unusual cardigans except the fabric content (usually has nylon in it with wool) is not worth it to me.

I loved this piece of art and am quite pleased with my look!

    1. Thanks-I have never bought any clothes from the site. Before she died, the shop only did leather goods. The clothes are way over priced IMO.

And they don’t have the good sales that they use to.

  2. Terri, I love this jacket and shoes combination! The stripes and textures are so great for the artwork. I also am a fan of black and tan. It’s a very classic color combination that really looks great on everyone! Wonderful outfit, my friend!
