Hello and welcome to a Style Imitating Art Roundup featuring all the beautiful interpretations sent to me this week.
What is Style Imitating Art?
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This is that Wednesday for me!
This Week’s Inspirational Work
For this round, I chose one of my favorite paintings from the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Its title is “Interior with a Book.” There is also a vast landscape out that window. Knowing that Diebenkorn worked from California, I’ve always assumed that what I was looking at was ocean-it Cali, right? However, Nelson’s description of the painting leans towards this painting being landlocked.
I ignored that one. I’ve spent fifty years thinking it was water and that description didn’t turn me away from that thought. In my eyes, it will always be water, even though I am aware that it might not be.
Let’s Take a Look to See What Everyone Did
Reni-Reni is retired from blogging and her website is parked.
Reni said that the painting reminded her of her upcoming holidays on a cruise ship. She is actually taking the dress that she is wearing and will wear it when she is having dinner in the evening or for a stroll across the Greek isles that she will visit.
Sally, of Within a World of My Own
Sally was inspired by the blue and green color scheme and the many straight lines in the painting to put together her outfit. This was amazing work and she nailed it.
Marsha of Marsha in the MIddle
I love this vision in blue. Her kimono and dress mimic the ocean (which is what she also saw in the background) waves seen through the window. Her camel colored shoes ground the outfit like the table legs in the foreground.
Your Hosts
Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey
It was slightly too warm for it, but Salazar couldn’t resist the perfect combo of the blues and the green scarf. She also added a book! I joined our local book club earlier this year and can’t believe that I didn’t think of grabbing one!
Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge
In her email, Shelbee said, “The first that came to mind when I looked at the artwork was this really old green tie dye wrap skirt in the same colors as the grass. I added a blue tie down button down as a jacket over a pale blue tank top to reflect the sky. And black accessories brought in the dark color of the chair. Because there is a book on the table, I also carried the book I am currently reading which is one of my all time favorites, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. These are items I never would have thought to pair together if not for the art prompt. And I absolutely love the way the whole thing came together.”
Another book! And it turns out one of her favorites is one of my favorites.
And Me
For this one, I borrowed my daughter’s dress. As mentioned Monday, I did make it and found this fabric. Yes, I love it, but I made it for her!
This wraps up this Review for this round of Style Imitating Art. Thank you everyone for your wonderful interpretation of my second curation for this year. It was wonderful to see such gorgeous ideas.
That’s it. Take care, everyone, and see you next week when Shelbee presents her first artwork.
Stay creative (with this group, that’s an easy one)!
I really do like the wrap ups because it’s so nice to see how everyone interpreted the work. Thanks for the work you put into this, Terri!

I love blue and green, so it’s great to see these colors so well-represented. Loved seeing everyone’s distinctive personal style come through in these outfits.

Everyone did such a wonderful job again! These are all such lovely outfits. I think art, like music, is all about the interpretation of the person perceiving it. Some saw the ocean, some saw the sky, so maybe Diebenkorn meant to paint it with a bit of ambiguity…to allow the viewer to go wherever the viewer felt like going! Another fabulous round of SIA!

A little late, but I actually just wore this dress to Shelly’s birthday dinner! A summer favorite. Thank you for the pockets! 🙂
