Style Imitating Art Roundup for Wayne Thiebaud’s Jawbreaker Machine

Hello and welcome to a Style Imitating Art review featuring all the beautiful interpretations sent to me this week.

What is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This is that Wednesday for me!

This Week’s Inspirational Work

For this round, I picked one of my favorite still lifes by Wayne Thiebaud. This work, as I mentioned before, has been in the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art for at least fifty years. I usually make sure I see it when I go. The best way to describe most of Thiebaud’s work is luscious. I think most folks are familiar with his cake paintings.

Here is a great little YouTube short about his work. I wish this was around when I was teaching because I did use some of Thiebaud’s work as inspiration for art projects.

Let’s Take a Look to See What Everyone Did

Reni-Reni is retired from blogging and her website is parked.

Reni thought this one looked quite easy at first sight, but turned out a challenge for her. Nothing was really suitable in her closet. However, she found a look in her archives which picks up the colors red, blue, and white. Her kimono is a glorious pop of color and definitely has the spirit of the painting.

Marsha of Marsha in the MIddle

Marsha went looking for polka dots and found she had none! Then, she thought of this skirt and thought it mimicked the colors of the gumballs fairly well. And the robin egg blue is perfect for Thiebaud. This is such a pretty look.

Your Hosts

Salazar said that it took some thinking because she doesn’t have anything so colorful in her wardrobe. In the end, she went with the skirt as a nod to the machine itself, her neckerchief with the stripes, and the berry print is a nod to the jawbreakers themselves. I really love this outfit.

Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

With yellow being the dominant color in the painting, Shelbee wore a light yellow maxi dress to start her outfit. On this, she layered a colorful striped poncho that has a similar color palette to the painting and wore her new rainbow sunhat to pull in even more colors to represent the colors of the jawbreakers. For red, she wore her red cowgirl boots to represent the two red 1¢ symbols at the base of the jawbreaker machine. Wonderful job Shelbee!

And Then There Is Me

I put my outfit together on the hottest day we have had up to this point. I used the three primary colors for impact. This painting is mainly those three colors: red, blue, and yellow. It also gives vibes for the 4th of July and I got a few compliments, with people also mentioning that it was looking like I was ready for the 4th…..it’s probably those red stripes!

I wore my sun hat because the sun was very intense that day.

This wraps up this Review for this round of Style Imitating Art. Thank you everyone for your wonderful interpretation of my second curation for this year. It was wonderful to see such gorgeous ideas.

That’s it. Take care, everyone, and see you next week when Shelbee presents her first artwork.

Stay creative (with this group, that’s an easy one)!
