Red, White, and Blue for Wayne Thiebaud’s Jawbreaker Machine

Hello, and welcome to Style Imitating Art’s “Reveal Monday”. Today is the day that the hosts, unveil our interpretations of the chosen artwork.

What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Round’s Art Work

Wayne Thiebaud was an American painter known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects—pies, lipsticks, paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, and hot dogs—and his landscapes and figure paintings. As I mentioned in my previous post, this painting has been a faithful friend during my Nelson Atkin’s Museum of Art visits during the last fifty years.

My Take

This look was inspired by both the painting, “Jaw Breaker Machine, and the holiday tomorrow. I wore this outfit last Thursday when we decided to run some errands in the city. This was also our hottest day of the year to this point (100 F).

Again, I am wearing white pants. This pair of cropped jeans have become pretty important to my summer capsule wardrobe. By Everlane, they have already been washed and lined dried quite a few times. I did find them second-hand on eBay two years ago and they have turned out to be one of the best buys I’ve made during the last five years.

The red and white striped knitted top was made by me from Burda Magazine in 2016. I have subscribed to Burda Magazine on and off but am ashamed to say this is the only thing I have ever made from them. I originally had cuffs on the sleeves (a deviation from the original pattern) but last year decided it was time to remove them and I’ve been happier with the top since. The original post where I talk about all the sewing details (and a pretty cute picture of a pretty young Niki) can be found HERE.

I usually wear this top as a tunic but this time around I tucked it in. I think I like it better worn as a tunic.

My shoes are navy suede espadrilles by Vince Camuto, which I had since 2017. I was worried early on that suede would be too hot for summer, but in sandals, it is not. I also brought along a pair of navy Keds, which I did eventually change into.

I carried a camera bag by Francis Valentine. I’m still carrying this bag, but it’s time to clean it and put it away for a while.

Being the sunny day that it was, I donned Coolibar Avery Raffia sun hat to protect my face.

Another important purchase that I am wearing is my new prescription sunglasses. This is only the second pair I’ve ever owned and I am really enjoying them!

One of our stops was one of our favorite garden centers

That sums it up for me for this round.

I hope you find something in this work that inspired you and didn’t mind the ramble into my sewing life. Send me what you come up with at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com along with a small blurb on how the work influenced your choices by Wednesday. I will do a roundup this Thursday featuring all your designs. Things are running later this round because of the holiday tomorrow.

Take care everyone and stay creative!

Here’s me wearing the top in July 2016. As I said, I like it better just hanging out. Also, you can see the original cuffs that I eventually removed. On my feet, are my navy Keds, which I ended up wearing to finish out our errands last Thursday. I am going to have to find those jeans. I like the fringes!

  1. That top is amazing! And your outfit is perfect for the holiday. And it works well with the art work too.

  2. What a fun top, Terri! And this look is so great for the painting and for the holiday! Aren’t prescription sunglasses so wonderful? I have had them for many, many years and what a difference they make in my life. They can be pricey but totally worth it, in my opinion.
