Green, Navy, and Tan for Juan Gris’s “Still-life with Checked Tablecloth”

Welcome to my interpretation for this round of Style Imitating Art.

A Little Background

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The next Wednesday, the curator shares all the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Curator

Salazar is our curator for this round and has picked a still-life by Juan Gris, a Cubist contemporary of Pablo Picasso. It’s a good piece for transitioning between seasons.

My Choices for this Challenge

As much as I love this piece and the checked patterns, I only have one gingham dress in black and white so I had to find a different solution than checks. As usual, I went with color and used plaid to replace the checks.

I chose some stretch twill Tommy Hilfiger trousers that I found in the “The Last Ac”t section inside a Macy’s store in Kansas City. I wore them a lot last Spring and after putting together this outfit for today’s post, know that they are going to become one of those”uniform pieces” for me this Fall. This will be a nice alternative to my constant jean attire.

I’m showing a closeup because the print is so small that from a distance you can’t really see the color, but I did do green!

Lynnie decided to get in most of my photos this round. She’s the little two-year-old Poodle that I adopted last March.

The rest of the outfit is pretty simple. I am wearing a new black oversized Gloria Vanderbilt shirt that I found on sale at Macy’s online (I do like my Macy’s).

For the brown that is in the painting, I picked a small tan bag. It’s one of those I got when I subscribed to the Curateur box for the year. It is the only bag from that year’s experience, that I’ve not donated. I was only doing that experience for one year and found that I just don’t like cheap bags, which were the only type that came in these boxes. All the other products were great, I just didn’t like it when they sent me a bag.

OK, back on the subject. It would have been easy to pick black shoes, but I had enough black going on. That is when the Santoni loafers came out. I found these on The RealReal last Fall. Santoris are pretty pricey new, but I got a deal and a half at The RealReal. Ordering like this, you always take a chance with shoes, as far as fit. These were a bit tight, but they are stretching out nicely. I could have sent them back, but I loved them so much, I chanced that I could work with them because leather is workable material.

I am also wearing a very minimal necklace from Michael Golan.

That’s it, I’m done.

I hope this art inspires you to create a look and that you will join us. Send a photo of your SIA-inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to Salazar whose email is 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow. She will share the submissions on her blog this Wednesday.

Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.

If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are @terrigardner_meadowtree, @14shadesofgrey, and @shelbeeontheedge.

Time to go and see you later!

    1. Thanks Marsha, I had what I had. The loafer color doesn’t really go with the painting, I guess but after some point the outfit takes over for me. These shoes are also leather lined-I give it to the Italians as far as craftsmanship.

  1. Terri, the shoes were the first thing to catch my eye. They are gorgeous! I am so glad that they are stretching nicely for you. Plaid was a great idea for the gingham. I got stuck on gingham and couldn’t get myself away from it. I really like this outfit for fall, but I am not ready for fall yet!

    1. Thanks, I didn’t have any gingham to use-that Mary Quant dress from ‘66 just wasn’t going to work. So it is what it is. I love these shoes but they still could stretch out a tad more.
