My Inspiration from a Still-Life by Kristy Goggio

Welcome to my interpretation for this round of Style Imitating Art.

A Little Background

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The next Wednesday, the curator shares all the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Curator

This round is created by Shelbee.

Her pick for this round is an earlier painting (probably during the ’90s) by Kristy Giggio. This painting is in her personal collection and she found it for $10 at a garage sale. Now that is a bargain!

My Take

My daughter loaned me this top because I didn’t have anything I thought really worked in my closet for the main focus point. But, I remembered her top that she made from Vogue 9243 out of an Italian cotton voile purchased from Mood fabric. In my memory, I thought it was a Liberty of London print. But there is a lot of gorgeous fabric out there from Italy too.

The abstract floral/paisley print is just beautiful (and lends itself to a little Boho, I think) and I thought it played well with the abstract floral nature of the painting. A voile is the perfect fabric for these large double-layered sleeves. They just seem to float. Voile is fairly thin and she did line the top, so it isn’t see-through.

It was a lot of fun wearing this top. I was hoping that my daughter would forget to take her top home and maybe I could wear it this week, but I just checked and she remembered it, darn!

I used my fringy jeans to work for all the blue represented. The straw hat and brown belt bag harkens to the natural elements. Also, it looks to me that the tablecloth has a brown tone to it too.

This brown bag was not my first pick and I rarely wear it. I came on one of the Curateur boxes during the year that I subscribed. However, I couldn’t find the vintage straw that I wanted to use. I am redoing a room and things are stored in various places and I just couldn’t find it. Of course, I will probably locate it when I don’t need it.

I picked the salmon-colored sandals because I thought they went with the top and have had them since about 2008 and they keep on keeping on. These days, I do wear them sparingly because I will be very sad when they go to shoe heaven.

The necklace is designed by Michel Golan. This top just didn’t tolerate a large statement piece of jewelry. But at the same time, I wanted something.

I think as far as the painting, that is all I have to say.

More about Vogue 9243

Vogue 9243 is a great pattern. I bought it first and made my version in 2017 and it is still in publication! That’s pretty good for a “Big 4” pattern company, I think its longevity is due to all the fantastic sleeve options. There are four completely different sleeve designs in the pattern. I did the three-tier design and still enjoy wearing it. I’m not sure if a great sleeve really goes out of style. The link to my original Sew-Sew Life article about it can be found HERE.

That finishes me for this one and I hope you enjoyed reading about my idea for this painting. Have you sent Shelbee your idea? If you have not done so already, please send it to Shelbee at shelbeeontheedge@gmail.com by tomorrow.

See you next time!

  1. Oh, this top is perfect! I would just have to keep borrowing it until she forgot all about it. You picked up on details I completely missed. That makes these challenges so fun, of course!

I am making a skirt this week in preparation to make it in Liberty fabric. I didn’t want to spend that kind of money and then have a giant fail!

    Have a wonderful week!

  2. Oh, what a pretty blouse, Terri! I am bummed for you now that your daughter remembered to take it home with her! I love it with those fringed hem jeans and the coral sandals. And of course, your hat is a brilliant finishing touch as always!
