Yellow, Black, and White for “Suntan” by Francoise Gilot

Welcome to my interpretation for this round of Style Imitating Art.

A Little Background

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The next Wednesday, the curator shares all the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Curator

Salazar is our curator for this round and has picked a painting by Francoise Gilot who passed away this week at 101. Although a distinguished artist in her own right, she is probably most universally known for her relationship with Pablo Picasso and as the only woman to leave him.

My Choices for this Challenge

This work of art is color-blocked. That is perfect for me because that is what I do 95% of the time. I just have a lot of solid pieces rather than prints. Although I try to add prints to my wardrobe, it is hard to find ones that I like. There are quite a few prints in my fabric stash, but that means I have to get around to making them up and I am very, very show as far as that goes.

The Yellow Top

I am giving this top its own headline because this is its fourth appearance for the Style Imitating Art challenge. Anytime I need something bright, out comes the top. By Jones New York, I bought it at the Osage Beach Outlet Mall back around 2009. I think it is destined to stay in my closet forever.

I fell in love with all those tucks and the textured 100% cotton. That bright yellow probably doesn’t look the best against my skin and honestly, if there had been another color there, I would have probably gone with it. In the end, it has been a good faithful reliable blouse. Yep, it’s not going anywhere.

Everything Else

I’ve had these 2nd hand Everlane white cropped flared white jeans for about a couple of years (from eBay). I had three candidates for this post which included a pair of white narrow trousers that I roll up or a full-length pair of white American Eagle jeans. These won because of their easy breezy look and my top is short enough that they worked together.

I’ve been interchanging two pair of black sandals this season (or as far as we are into it), a pair of flat Rebecca Minkoff slip-ons, and these wedges by Marc Fisher. The wedges dress up and the flats dress down. I had forgotten how stiff cork is and found that I needed a bit of practice in wearing these. I think I like shoes that bend with my feet so know this will be these will be the first and last pair of cork anything that I will ever buy.

The Eric Javits Bag

Over the years, I’ve gotten five second-hand Eric Javits bags from eBay. This was the last one and it is the most used one. I’ve had it for about five years and it is a summer staple, so it was very appropriate that this was the one I picked (I’ve been carrying it quite a bit this week already).

It is from his Squishee line, and screams, “Yes, Summer is here!” His Squishees are wonderful and you can find them in all kinds of colors and designs. It was very dangerous for me to go to eBay to get a link to the Squishees, but I got out unscathed pocketbook-wise.

I kept the jewelry simple; the three black bangles are from Kansas City artist/designer Jennifer Janesko. The pendant necklace is by Melinda Maria. I wear this pendant a lot and got it in one of the Curateur boxes when I subscribed a couple of years ago. I really like her designs and would not have a problem purchasing one. I especially like her zodiac constellation necklaces.

My earrings were picked up from TJ Maxx last year.

That’s it, I’m done.

I hope this art inspires you to create a look and that you will join us. Send a photo of your SIA-inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to Salazar whose email is 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow. She will share the submissions on her blog this Wednesday.

Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.

If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are @terrigardner_meadowtree, @14shadesofgrey, and @shelbeeontheedge.

Time to go and see you later!

  1. Oh, this yellow top really is good. Perhaps, if you wore a scarf closer to your face you would feel more comfortable wearing it. Your accessories are fabulous as always! While I loved this print and found the artist’s life fascinating, I don’t really think I did it any justice!

  2. Wonderful interpretation, Terri! This bright yellow top is really fun with all its little tucks and pleats. I would have been drawn to it as well! While I don’t find yellows to be my best color either, I am currently having a lovey dovey moment with all things yellow! If it makes you feel good, I say wear it even if it isn’t your very best color!

  3. I love blouses with tucks like that too, so I completely relate to your buying it even if it isn’t your preferred color. Love how the colorblocking in your outfit worked for the painting – I hadn’t thought of colorblocking but it’s a wonderful approach to the piece. The stiff cork soles on those sandals would be my downfall…probably literally!
