Floral Kimono for Pierre-Joseph Rédoute’s Roses

Hello, and welcome to Style Imitating Art’s “Reveal Monday”. Today is the day that the hosts, unveil our interpretations of the chosen artwork.

What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Round’s Art Work

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was born on 10 July 1759 and died on 19 June 1840. He was a painter and botanist from Belgium, known for his watercolors of roses, lilies, and other flowers at the Château de Malmaison, many of which were published as large, colored engraving. He was nicknamed, “the Raphael of flowers,” and has been called one of the greatest botanical illustrators of all time. We grow roses and I have had one of his books for quite a few years.

My Take

For the second SIA in a row, I am going with a Kimono. Kimonos seem to be the only items that I have with strong floral patterns. The black in this kimono is flocked velvet which is offset by flowers in hues of purple, rose, and magenta. I’ve styled it semi-dressy (pants and flats). I will have to admit, that this kimono gets forgotten about. It’s nice for to get it out so folks can see it.

Also again, I am using my “black column” for this look. The blacks in the top and pants don’t match perfectly so I separated them with a black belt. I made the black stretch knit pants a few years ago and the black shell was thrifted. So it’s a little bit of everything (I bought the kimono new in 2020).

Personalizing with  Accessories

I love accessories for making a personal statement and picked purple and black to coordinate with the top. The bag is one of Rebecca Minkoff’s  Love Bags and the metallic flats are by Marc Fisher. The Geode and bead necklace is by Kansas City artist Rita Uridge but the black bangles are thrifted. My Kate Spade bow belt was found used on eBay. The chunky amethyst ring is from Gemsporium, a jewelry designer out of Thailand that has a shop on eBay.

A note about the Geode necklace. I dropped it and it cracked! Yea for Super Glue because I am pretty sure it is going to be good for a few more years.

That sums it up for me for this round.

I hope you find something in this work that inspired you and didn’t mind the ramble into my sewing life. Send me what you come up with at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com along with a small blurb on how the work influenced your choices by tomorrow. I will do a roundup this Wednesday featuring all your designs.

Take care everyone and stay creative!

  1. What a gorgeous kimono, Terri! Many of my kimonos have big bold floral prints as well so that’s the direction I went with this challenge, too. I am always a fan of a simple black column topped with a dramatic kimono! Fabulous outfit, my friend.

  2. Your kimono is perfect for this challenge! You’ve picked up the colors and the print so well. I also love your accessories. I’m finding I’ve been doing more and more of an underlying column of color lately. I think it’s because I’m not sure how to style kimonos any other way! I wish I were a bit more daring in that respect.

  3. A chic, sophisticated take on the inspiration artwork! I like how brought in the black color from the background behind the images, and the gorgeous kimono really stands out beautifully against the column of black.
