Hello and welcome to the new year of Style Imitating Art. Amazingly, for the third year, I am opening the year with my selection. It seems, this year isn’t different for me than the two previous ones. I am opening with a work of art from what is called the “Dutch Golden Age.” Artists such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Johannes Vermeer, Jan Steen, Judith Leyster, and many others, make it very easy.
This year, I am starting with Jan Steen. Admittedly, it is not the painting I was looking for. I’ve decided that this year, I am starting research in my personal art library and then seeing where it leads me. This round led me to “The Art Lesson”, by Jan Steen. Being an art teacher for a good part of my life, I thought this was an excellent one to start with.

So Before We Get Started-What Is Style Imitating Art?
Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee On the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.
Why Did I Pick This Work of Art?
I just liked this work. Admittedly, I was after a painting with dancing in it but did not find the one that I wanted online. During my research, I found this gem. The hourglass on the wall made me smile because it reminded me of when the kids were practicing for the piano and the timer was set.
It is a simple composition with a lot of colors and textures. With the dusty roses, pinks, blues (and blue greens), golds, and tans, I thought there would be colors that should be in most closets.
It even raises the possibility of using a hat or some type of decorative hairpiece. There’s even fur!
How Can This Work Inspire Your Style?
Next Monday Salazar, Shelbee, and I will publish our interpretations of this work.
I hope this inspires you to create a look from your closet and that you will join us. Send me your picture of your SIA-inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to meadowtreestyle@gmail.com by Tuesday, January 17th. I’ll share the submissions on my blog on Wednesday, January 18th
Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.
If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are @terrigardner_meadowtree, @14shadesofgrey, and @shelbeeontheedge.
Hope to see you there!

I have no idea yet, but I will browse my closet…

I have faith in you-I hit the layering, fur, and brown tones for mine.

Oh, I love this one, Terri! There’s so much to choose from! I’m going to have to let it percolate a bit to see what comes front and center!

I hope so-I went with a faux fur vest and, of course used a lot of brown and textures.
