Metallics, Silver, and Silk for Yves Tanguy’s “At the Risk of the Sun”

Hello, and welcome to Style Imitating Art’s “Reveal Monday”. Today is the day that the hosts, unveil our interpretations of the chosen artwork.

What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspirational image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Round’s Art Work

Again, I have gone with one of my most personally loved paintings at one of my happy places, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. After I decided in December that this would be my last year as a SIA host, it became a focus to concentrate on some of my most loved artworks. I personally feel that I have been blessed to have, what I consider to be a first-class, art museum in my life. In fact, when my husband Michael wanted to move to the country, I said fine, but I wouldn’t move more than an hour away from Kansas City and Nelson Atkins. It probably was culture in general, but Nelson Atkins played a big part in the culture.

I decided for this round that Yves Tanguy would be my pick. His “At the Risk of the Sun,” has fascinated me for decades. It has the isolation that one would find in a De Chirico (who influenced Tanguy to become an artist), and has the harkening to some planet in a galaxy far far away. It spoke to my love Treky (as in Star Treck fan, starting with the original) soul.

Another post, another dog! Bea decided that she wanted to get in this one.

What I Styled

This stylization is a typical me. It is a mixture of old, thrifted, made by me. I will just describe it from top to bottom. First off, I have a dark grey silk blouse that I bought for my youngest daughter around 2007. She never really wore it so I took it. It originally had just had a hook and eye closure. I changed those to the Frog closures that it has now and usually wear it as a light jacket. The reason of that is that I really can’t button it up! Under this silk shirt, I have a thrifted lace Axcess top (which means that it probably came from Kohls).

The paper bag pants were made by me. The article on that experience is found HERE. I love Paper Bag pants but just don’t have the figure to successfully wear them. However, I found that I have a jacket or top used as a jacket, they work just fine.

Everything Else

Let’s start with my necklace. It is a Stella and Dot, which I found soon after I retired from teaching (which was 2012) on eBay. The next two items are from the RealReal. My Reva flats by Tori Burch were the first things I ever bought rom there and that was early 2016. Two summers ago, I found the metallic silver Michael Kors bag. Both have been staples in my Spring/Summer/Fall closets.

I like how this outfit pulled together and there’s a good chance I will be wearing it to something or the other.

I think this pretty much sums me up.

I hope this painting also inspires you to find and bring out some of the silver and grey in your closet.

Send me what you come up with at meadowtreestyle@gmail.com along with a small blurb on how the work influenced your choices by Wednesday. I will do a roundup this Thursday featuring all your designs. The Roundup this time will be rather simple (no collage), in that I we are going to be exploring Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Take care everyone and stay creative!

  1. Terri, I really like this monochromatic grey outfit to represent the painting! Your silk top turned jacket is gorgeous. I also love paper bag pants but they don’t look all that great on me. I think paper bag pants require some more plumpness in the rear end to make them fabulous and I have never had any plumpness in that area! Great job on this fun challenge! Enjoy your trip to Santa Fe and Taos. That sounds really exciting!
