Sheath Dress for Paul Klee’s “Castle and Sun”

Castle and Sun, 1928

Klee, was a German artist who was actually born in Switzerland. Working in the early 20th century (he passed away in 1940), it is hard to pigeonhole him into one gendre. He has been associated with Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Surrealism, and Abstraction.

As an art teacher, I always had fun developing ideas featuring his works with elementary students. I’ve always been quite fond of Paul Klee. I smiled a bit when Salazar sent me this one for us to feature.

My Take

Immediately, upon seeing this work, my Pendleton sheath dress just sprang into my mind. I found it during the Summer of 2013 when we were up in Minnisota attending a wedding. On the way home, while still in Minnisota, we saw an outlet mall with a Pendleton outlet. Needless to say, we had a great time!

Between the color and the geometrical print, I think this dress fits the painting perfectly. I have always liked how the princess seams turn back to the side seams for front pockets. I really don’t wear it that much but still appreciate the style and so keep it around.

Accessories

The colors on the necklace go perfectly with the dress but I probably wouldn’t wear this necklace with it. I really just don’t like them together. But for today, I went with it.

The sandals, which are old as the dress has three different textures, sueded, reptile textured, and patent leather. Picked up at TJ Maxx, they appealed to me. But I think, I have usually worn them, with a pair of brown linen pants. But since, I decided to use one of my vintage Rodo bags, I decided to go with these. Both have brown reptile and have a textured surface.

The only two other things I used today are a thrifted wide bangle and some triple large hoop earrings that I just picked up on sale from TJ Maxx this week. It was the first time since pre-pandemic that I had been to TJ’s. It was fun to go in and look around.

This is a little dressier than I’ve been doing for SIA lately, and a bit classic. Here’s another way, I wore my dress about five years ago. I kept the accessories a light tan. I could have done the exact same look for today (I still have everything in this photo), but hey, SIA is the time to try different things.
