Welcome to my interpretation for this round of Style Imitating Art.

A Little Background

She chose “Tree of Life” by Keith Haring
My Take

I decided that it would be best for me to pick one of the colors and combine it with black. Not working with green in a while, I decided to go in that direction. My first idea was to use the green Melissa shoes I bought in 2016. That led to the decision to take a top that I made from Butterick 6640 pattern back in the 80’s. And yes, you can still find it! This top always reminded me of abstracted tree bark so that image fitted right in with this challenge.

I did refashion this top in 2016 from its original design and I describe what I did HERE. If I had any desire to wear the top again, something had to be done. But honestly, I don’t think I’ve worn it since I used it for the post back then. It was nice to get it out again.

I picked my favorite black trousers from Mango and my black DeMellier Marakesh crossbody bag to go with it. The chain necklace is by
Eddy Borgo from back when I had the Curateur subscription.

And There’s a Second Look

As I was putting things together, I had an idea that I had never tried. It came to me that this top might look really good under my black DKNY blazer for a dressier look but still be pretty casual. This is something I would wear to go out for a bit to eat during the week.

I changed or added three things. My Melissas were traded in my DKNY kitten heels (second hand on eBay) and a cute thrifted box bag (pre-pandemic). Also added, is a thrifted clover motif necklace.

Then I decided to add the scarf or sash that I made with leftover fabric. I would probably only wear this if I was wearing the jacket.

And a blast from the past. I bring you August 2016. I did use the scarf as a sash. I still have the vintage Koret bag (secondhand eBay and Stella & Dot necklace (secondhand on eBay). Also, I still have the linen capris that I made in 2014 from a Vogue pattern. A note about those vintage Koret bags. They are highly priced, now and then. Back in the day, they had the reputation of being some of the best around and when I was in school were expensive. It seems that they have retained their value. Of course, nothing like Chanel but on 1st dibs, they can run pretty high.

  1. I totally remember that green top! I swear there are some Thanksgiving pictures at Donna & Jamie’s old house in Lee Summit where you are wearing it!

    Btw, also checked out the flashback post to making the top, and I loooove that Rodo bag, and the whole outfit (white with embroidered long-sleeve top). Perfectly summery.

    1. Yep, that top is very much a blast from the past from skinnier days. I guess when I stopped sewing so much, I started to hang on the the stuff that I made. Michelle gave me the embroidered top back when she worked at that clinic in Carthage-so it’s been a while.

  7. Terri, this top is gorgeous! I love this shade of green. Actually, I love all shades of green so no surprise there. While I do really like your outfit with the black blazer, I am definitely partial to the one with those fabulous green Melissa shoes! I also really love your flashback 2016 outfit with this top. The sash is such a fun addition to play around with!

    1. Thank you Shelbee. I definatley fell in love with the shoes when they went on sale all those years ago. I’m really a sage and forest green lover but once in a while I have to dabble in the brights.
