Lots of Blue for Christi Belcourt’s “The Mystery of Water”

Hello, and welcome to Style Imitating Art’s “Reveal Monday”. Today is the day that the hosts, unveil our interpretations of the chosen artwork.

What Is Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge, and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Presenter

That would be me. Last Monday, I first presented “The Mystery of Water” by Christi Belcourt. Being “Earth Month”, I thought for a while about what type of image and artist I wanted. I chose Canadian Christi Belcourt a Métis visual artist. The majority of her work explores and celebrates the beauty of the natural world. Belcourt has created large, mural-sized acrylic paintings that resemble the beadwork of her ancestors and community, She accomplishes this by using her brush (or a needle-like tool) to make tiny dots that resemble traditional beadwork.

My Take

In this painting, the standout color is blue. The fish bodies do have what seems to be black and the fish have yellow streaming off them. There is also a bit of red found in the round objects floating with the current. I decided to go with those colors, if possible.

I started out with a dramatic black top that I made four years ago. It was one of those “pattern hacking” things and I wrote about it HERE. I don’t wear it for every day but it’s great for art opening types of things. Black leggings have always been the accompanying garment with it. But, I’ve been thinking about adding a skinny rib knit maxi skirt with it. They are actually called skirt leggings.

And Now the Blue

The next step was find the right accessories that had blue, which is represented by two shades; primary blue and turquoise. First up, is a gauze scarf of unknow orgins. I really don’t remember but possibly could have gotten it about four years ago when I was thrifting quite a bit. Black and red is also represented in it’s pattern.

Other blues are picked up in the clutch, back of my shoes, ring and cuff. The cuff was thrifted and the ring is from Cheryl Eve Acosta’s Mer de Verre collection. The clutch is a Rebecca Minkoff Leo. I know I’ve said this before but she doesn’t have to many left on her site. The best selection in going to be on eBay. There are some showing up without the zipper hardware and I think these might be fakes because the zips were what made the Leo the Leo in my opinion.

Reptile Scales

Fish have scales so I also felt comfortable using a little reptile textures in my look, including the bright yellow on my clutch and the turquoise/black pattern on the back of my flats.

I’m wearing earrings this round also. That’s a rare event for me because I rarely bother putting them on. With my usually hair style they are covered up and earrings are a hassle when wearing masks. But these dangles (got at some blogger event years ago) were blue and with this hair style can actually be seened. Not really noticible in my photos, here they are as plant ornaments!

So that finishes it up for me. Don’t forget to check out Shelbee and Salazar to see what they interpreted my pick. And now that things are opening up, I imagine I will do so more.

I have worn my top quite often and have gone so many different ways with the accessories so it’s been on Instragram quite a bit.

And I would especially like to thank this young man. Michael, my husband had a full knee replacement last week. Not knowing how I was going to take photos, I had an old photo of something from years ago from the blog to use. To the rescue came our youngest grandson. Harrison, who graduated from high school a semester early and was able to stay with and help around the house and farm. He also got the job of taking grandma’s photos for the blog. Of course, I’m prejudiced, but I think he did a great job.

    1. Thank you. I like my accessories. The clothes I make have seemed to be pretty basic (except for my last top) and that means I can have fun with accessories. I think my stand-in photographer did pretty good too!

  3. Terri, this is a brilliant interpretation of the painting! As much as I love the dramatic black outfit (that top is magnificent), your accessories are stealing the show, for sure. What a fun combination of colors and textures and you really did manage to capture all of the lovely jewel tones in the painting. This is one of my favorite looks of yours ever!

    1. Thank you, Shelbee. I will have to admit that I think I’ve spent a lot more money on accessories (that includes shoes, bags, jewelry, and the like) than actual clothes. I need to find more ways to wear my scarves. That’s one accessory that I don’t think I’ve utilized enough. I’m going to try and use them more with my SIAs.

    1. Thank you Sally, In reality, it’s just a Tee-Shirt that’s very long in the back- LOL. I like that I can so many of my accessories with it and feel like I always have a new outfit.

    1. Thank you. This one was basically about blue and I guess I have a lot of blue accessories. Movement is a harder one to interpreter but I think the top and scarf managed to pull that off.

  8. That top is stunning, Terri! I am always impressed by your sewing skills! I need to do some studying, watching tutorials, etc. My granddaughter wanted to learn to sew over Spring Break (as if sewing has start/end points). We made a wrap top from woven cotton first. Then, we tried the same top in knit…stopped me right in my tracks!!! I have only sewn with a knit once before…I’m not sure I’ll do it again!

    I love how you picked out so many different parts of the art work in your outfit. Unfortunately, life has been quite chaotic here so I’m not able to join this time. Hopefully, next week!

    1. Hello, Marsha-I was worried that some might not get to participate because it fell on Easter weekend.
      As far as sewing with knits. Google, “sewing knits without a serger” and you will get all kinds of good info. This top was made before I had a serger.

    1. Thank you Michelle. They took him off his walker and am now letting him use a cane so he is progressing nicely. I was nice to use a scarf that I had never worn before and have everything come out looking pretty good. I guess there’s a reason that I’ve never gotten rid of any scarf I’ve ever owned! LOL
