Style Imitating Art-Snow Shadows by Tom Thomson

Hello and welcome to a Style Imitating Art roundup featuring all of you who submitted ideas for this round’s art inspiration.

Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Inspirational Work

Snow Shadows by Tom Thomsom

This is my last pick for the year and I wanted to pick something with rich winter colors. I chose Tom Thomson’s Snow Shadows because of this reason. Snow in the twilight can be gorgeous. This work was painted in the Spring of 1916. There are very few paintings by Tom Thomson because his life was tragically cut short by a canoe accident in the Summer of 1917.

His later work (of which this is) has had a great influence on Canadian art—paintings such as The Jack Pine and The West Wind have taken a prominent place in the culture of Canada and are some of the country’s most iconic works.

I actually had not heard of Tom Thomson until I was watching one of my favorite Canadian shows, Murdock, and Tom Thomson was shown as a young art student. I checked him out and loved his rich colors carried out in a thick impasto style.

Will You Join the Fun

I hope this art inspires you to create a look and that you will join us. Send me your picture of your SIA inspired outfit along with a small blurb on how you were inspired to meadowtreestyle@gmail.com Tuesday, December 14th. I’ll share the submissions on my blog on Wednesday, December 15th.

Anyone can participate and you certainly do not have to have a blog.

If you do share your inspirations on Instagram use the hashtag #StyleImitatingArt so we know you are there. You can also tag us in the images. Our Instagram names are: @terrigardner_meadowtree, @daenelt, and @14shadesofgrey.

Hope to see you at there!

  1. Oh, I just love the work of Tom Thomson, capturing the beautiful Canadian landscapes!

Style imitating art is a fabulous idea! So interesting that you watch Murdock! You can learn interesting bits of history, like Tom Thomson – one of the Group of Seven Canadian artists. We have some of their prints in our home, but they are already packed for our move in 10 days!

I will add a hashtag to a top from Northern Reflections – inspired by nature, designed in Canada! It’s Birch trees and birds – I just love it! Hope you like it!

  2. Terri, I love this pick! And we have a nice fresh coat of snow outside this morning so I am hoping to get something styled and photographed while it’s all fresh and white! I am looking forward to digging around for some info on this artist. Have you ever read the book Canoe Country? It’s about the settling of Canadian by canoe. Super fascinating. And the bit you have shared about this artist made me think of that!
