Rosa Bonheur’s Sheep By the Sea: The Style Imitating Art Interpretations

Hello and welcome to a Style Imitating Art roundup featuring all the wonderful interpretations that were sent to me this week.

Style Imitating Art?

Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey, Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks and me. Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of us selects an inspiration image and we each post the image on our blogs. The following Monday we share our art-inspired outfits. The following Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.

This Week’s Presenter

That would be me.

This Weeks Inspirational Work

For this round, I chose a very calming work and one by a woman artist. Part of my aim for my presentation this year is to have as many women artists as I could. I end up featuring four women and five men when I’m finished.

After my last two picks, which were jammed with color and texture, I also wanted something more calming since the next two months in a lot of our lives is pretty hectic. I figure this year, folks are going to be back to a more normal schedule than last year.

This painting had a lot of green, blue, and white. Given the limited color range, I was really interested in what everyone would come up with.

So Here We Go…

I do list these in the order that I received them.

First up Is Reni of Reni’s Odds and Sods.

When she saw the painting, she immediately thought of her brown Teddy Bear coat. It definitely looks like sheep wool and the fact that it is brown makes me love it even more. There are a lot of brown sheep in this world! The boots, the coat and the jeans’ she’s talking my style!

Secondly, we have Suzi of The Grey Brunette

Suzy picked up the earth, sky, and the color of the sheep wool with her style. She was another who went with denim bottoms. She did an amazing job pulling this one together and I love it.

Thirdly, is Shelbee of Shelbee on the Edge

I always await Shelbee’s with anticipation. She always brings so much thought and creativity to the project. She chose a white faux fur vest, a cabled beret for the sheep. The rest of her ensemble picks up the color of the ocean and sky and she is sitting on the seashore!

Forthly, we have Marsha from Marsha in the Middle

This is Marsha’s second style for SIA. Welcome back Marsha and I hope you become a regular. Marsha found all the elements of the painting in her “Multiples” jacket from Von Maur. This is such a gorgeous jacket and I love the sleeve detail! She sent me two pictures to choose from and I had to pick the one with that gorgeous rug. I see the sea in it!

And Now For Your Hosts

Salazar of 14 Shades of Grey

Salazar went for “Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral” look; Highlands all the way! Rosa Bonheur painted this after a visit to the Scottish Highlands and everything works in this for the painting. Not only did she get the basic colors of the painting but she got some regional flair in there too.

Daenel of Living Outside the Stacks

Daenel picked up all the colors in the painting with another fantastic Kantha Bae piece. This was originally a poncho but she turned it into a top-perfect upcycling. I have loved all her Kantha Bae pieces. They are so unique and from being on Kantha Bae’s website, it seems that all the pieces are one of a kind. That is incredible because for what you get, they are very reasonable.

That rounds out this Review!

A big thank you to all of you who sent in such wonderful interpretations.

I was thinking of summer when I chose this work and everyone came up with great summer looks.

See you all next week when it will be Salazar’s turn to challenge us. See you next Monday!

Take care and be creative.

  1. These are all so good! I really liked the whole calming feel of this painting and I really, really enjoyed researching the artist! She was something else…one of the first feminists to break down gender barriers and pave the way for future activists and future female artists. I also added a plaid coat to my outfit which is straight from a line of clothing that was inspired by the Highlander series so it was perfect for this piece as well! Thanks so much for all the work that goes into this series!

  2. Everyone did such a great job with the inspiration piece. Looking at the faux furs, I wish I’d opted to wear my sherpa vest. I always forget about it. Guess I need to move it to the front of my closet? Great choice for the inspiration piece.
