Winter White Sweater Dress & 2nd Loved 1st Friday Linkup

Welcome to my first post of 2018. MeadowTree Style had its second birthday this week. Two years ago I decided to try my hand at blogging about style. I had no idea where this road would take me or if I would find my groove. But here I am just having a ball.

I am so grateful for the wonderful people I have met in and around my Kansas City sphere and around the world. My life has become so much richer by taking this small step. I want to say thank you to all my readers and my Instagram friends. You are a special group. I so appreciate you.

You may notice that the blog looks a bit different. I celebrated MeadowTree Style’s  second birthday with a small upgrade for a new look.

A Sweater Dress

This Ellen Tracy sweater dress has been hanging in my closet for over a year. I picked it up on a whim at Joplin’s Salvation Army.  I quickly tried it on, got home, hung it up and promptly forgot about it. Finally, the time came to see if I could do something with it.

So why did I decide to get this dress (and it was a pretty quick decision)? For starters, I didn’t own and still don’t own any other sweater dress. It’s entirely cabled front to back and I love cables. As a knitter, I’ve liked and knitted the cable styles. Also, I’m attracted to flared skirts. So between the cables and the flair, this dress just seemed a winner.

I’m always saying that a piece has to go with at least three things already in my closet and I like to have something that I can a least style three different ways. This is especially true if it’s a dress.

Cables Don’t Like Competition

I tried so many things with this dress and almost everything fell flat. It’s the happiest when I just go simple.

Finally, I decided on just using my Gorgina Herrera’s MCK’s Les Racines Roots Medallion Necklace. I’ve been relying on this pendent a lot since getting it during the late fall. It’s classy but artsy at the same time.

The Nine West d’Orsay pumps I picked for this first styling does make for a dressier look.  I’ve had these for a while and am afraid the reptile print is sold out. However,  I was able to find this style in solid colors on Amazon. I love d’Orsay shoes but this was my first pair ever!

Still Tried to Make Something Work

 

I just didn’t want to give up and throw in the towel with this dress. I have some brown cabled leggings and used another dress belt that it matched my leggings.  Finally, I added some plaid Sam Edleman shoes that I picked up from Poshmark. I think this works but I do wish I could have come up with a third styling. Here’s to a challenge, eh!

New Faux Fur Jacket

But all I have to do is add my new vintage faux fur jacket from Goodwill, a cheetah scarf (also Goodwill), a vintage faux croc clutch, (vintage/antique shop-Hermann, MO) and I’m happy to go!

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know about this jacket because Rachelle took a picture of me at Joplin’s Goodwill about thirty seconds after I found it. This coat is originally from Seidenbach’s out of Tulsa.  After a bit of research, I found that this upscale clothing store closed doors around 1964. As far as I’m concerned, this is a true vintage jacket and in pristine condition. It must have spent years in back of some lady’s closet. I was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time to get to put it in my closet. The price tag was $18 which I think was a deal for the gem it was.

I feel cozy and elegant and will wear this jacket with everything. I especially love it with jeans. What do you think? Would you wear a jacket that’s close to sixty years old?

    1. Thank you Penny, Yep it has been pretty brutal here but this weekend is on the upswing, for a while. I am still pretty amazed I got the jacket. I think it has to be one on my favorite things I’ve found in years. I’m glad you gave me good feedback on the leggings. I was afraid the dress was going to be a bit long for leggings and I can’t hem this one up. Here’s to all of us having a healthy, fulfilled and contented 2018.

  2. I adore sweater dresses…in fact I have 4 or 5 in my closet. But there are times I struggle with what to wear with them because with tights, they stick unless I wear a slip!!
    I added my mom’s photo to your linkup because the maxi is from thredUp.
    And then my photo is with my hunter boots that are thrifted.

    Best to you in 2018! i will link up a few outfits, where i purchased items from Poshmark. I love sweater dresses, so your cream dress is so pretty! I cant stop staring at your vintage coat , love the faux fur and the rich brown. i bought the leopard jacket on Poshmark for about $60, and in my other outfit, the brown faux leather pants are Zara from Poshmark.

    1. Thank you for linking up Jess. I don’t know why, but this coat glows when it had it photo taken. I can’t believe it is as old as it has to be. I know one thing, I am going to wear it as much as I can. I still want a leopard jacket thought and that will probably be my next hunt. I’ve seen just to many neat vintage ones that a few of you own. If I am meant to have one, I will find it. Happy 2018 to you and your family, especially those fur babies!

    Sweater dresses are perfect for winter and you know how to style them perfectly, with a light touch for that’s all they need, such an easy piece to wear.
    I love the jacket and yes to 60 year old clothing, in a heartbeat as I think you say Stateside! You look so elegant and with those beautiful heels, that just has to be my fave of the three, so ladylike.

    1. Hi, Mary-Nice to hear from you. Those heels were bought on a whim when they went on sale last year. You are right about the shoes, they are pretty dressy and I really don’t wear them that much but they’re keepers because they are pretty cool. I just don’t really get rid of shoes, unless I actually wear them out.
      I am not exactly a “capsule” wardrobe type.

      As far as blogging, it has been worth it because I have met so many cool people, who share my same interests. I think that is why I now do it. I may never get to meet any of you but it sure is fun to see what all of you are up to. Take care and happy 2018!

      P.S. I didn’t even notice that Sophia was there (Michael did) and she has her tongue out-so unlady-like LOL

    I love cable too and have knit a few cable jumpers but so long ago I don’t think I would remember how now.

    1. Thanks Sally, I’ve knitted some simple 4×4 cables last year for a hat but I haven’t done the really intricate ones like I use to do. I missed that you knitted. I still knit, but really simple things now. happy 2018!

    1. Thank you Rena and thank you for stopping by, Yes about going all away around. I always look at the back before making up my mind about getting something. Sometimes it makes sense that a pattern hsn’t been repeated on the back but sometimes it’s just so the company can make a cheaper garment. The back treatment has to make sense to me.

  9. I find it hard to pick my favourite of your three stylings … the simple elegance of letting the dress speak for itself, the GORGEOUS look with leggings and those adorable pumps or the wow wow wow of the faux fur. Love em all. But if forced I would go with the fur. Clever lady!

      1. I am a huge fan of vintage clothing. I used to sell it actually. And right opposite me in this city is a fabulous depot de vente … I feel the need to pay a visit but of course one is not always quite so lucky in striking gold as you did …. that’s part of the fun 😊

    1. Thanks Bernadette. After the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, I tried to improve by shopping choices. I try not to be too preachy about it, just show how I operate. And I hope I come across that way I come across. I would like my enthusiasm spread.

    1. Thank you for stopping by Brigid. This is the first one I’ve had in years and it took me over a year to wear it. Strange but true because I wear sweaters all the time. I’m thinking about putting a brown turtleneck under it for another casual thing-we’ll see.

  17. I love the sweater dress and the different ways you’ve styled it. The faux fur jacket is fabulous! I’ve been looking for a chunky cable knit sweater dress but they are very hard to come by, which surprises me. I could try knitting one but it’d take me all year! Thanks for linking up!
